Are high quality building tapes worth the money?

In the world of high-performance building, the saying 'the devil is in the details' couldn't be more true. When designing homes for greater efficiency, many building professionals - and most homeowners - focus on the big-ticket items like increased levels of insulation, high-performance windows, and air barrier membranes with specific perm ratings. 

Choosing high performance building products is of course a very important first step, but how those products and design features are implemented is what makes the difference in the end.

It has long been known that an easy third of the heat loss in a home can be attributed to air leakage. So those fancy triple-pane windows with all expensive add-ons are great, but the tiny seams and penetrations that connect them are the most vulnerable points in the entire building envelope. 

That's why the choice of building tape is critical for a high-performance building envelope. The longevity and reliability of a tape is directly linked to the chemistry of its adhesive and its ability to withstand environmental stresses like wind pressure and seasonal temperature fluctuations. 

On a personal note, I was first convinced of the value of quality tapes 20 years ago by a worker I met on a site who had a leaking sunroof on his truck. He told me that due to the abuse of movement, rain, wind, and sun on black truck,  every tape he tried (electrical tape, duct tape, Tuck tape, etc) lasted at best 2 months. He then put on some leftofer Siga tape he had, and at that point it had been there for a year and still wasn't leaking.

What are high performance building tapes?

High-performance building tapes are specialized adhesive products designed to permanently seal seams, joints, and penetrations in a building's air and weather barrier. Unlike generic tapes (like the ubiquitous 'duct tape,' which is typically made from polyethylene and fabric mesh with a rubber-based adhesive), these tapes are designed to withstand the rigours of construction sites and the long-term stresses of a building envelope.

This includes exposure to a wide range of temperatures, humidity, UV rays during construction, and the constant thermal expansion and contraction of building materials. For this reason, high-performance tapes are always made with a highly durable backing material, and a superior adhesive.

Why is tape quality so important for a building's longevity?

In building science, the air barrier is considered the most important line of defence for a home's durability and energy performance. Air leakage, or the uncontrolled movement of air through the building envelope, can be a noteable source of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. It's also the main driver of moisture problems inside wall assemblies.

The average home can have countless openings and hundreds of feet of seams from air barriers, windows  doors, to electrical conduits, ventilation openings and plumbing pipes. So if your sealing method fails and allows warm, humid air to pass through walls in winter, air will condence and deposit moisture in walls as it escapes.

Over time, this moisture can lead to mould growth, rot, and the degradation of insulation and structural components. High-performance tapes create a continuous, robust seal over these weak points, ensuring a home remains airtight and dry. It is a common misconception that SIGA is the only company that uses solvent-free adhesives. That isn't true, and at this point the most respected manufacturers in the high-performance building field have all adopted this technology.

That rumor probably has roots in the fact that Siga got thier product to market early, but they also had a brilliant marketing campaign. It's illegal to ship food with anything toxic, so Siga at one time was including candies in their shipments to prove they were solvent-free and not hazardous.

SIGA

The Middle-ground solution: blue Tuck® Tape

The air sealing building tapes listed above are the top of the line options that offer the longest serving and most effective air barrier. We are keenly aware that not everyone is ready to pay the premium for those, which brings us to a reasonable comprimise. 

If this guide has not 'closed the deal' in convincing you to get the really good stuff, we 

Positioned as an effective middle ground between basic red tapes and premium solvent-free products, blue Tuck® Tape provides an accessible and reliable solution for better air-sealing. Unlike its more general-purpose red counterpart, this tape is made with a solvent-based acrylic adhesive specifically formulated for a stronger, more permanent bond to challenging materials like polyethylene vapor barriers.

While it's not a solvent-free product like higher-end options, its improved adhesive technology makes it a significantly better choice for creating a lasting air barrier seal. For many builders, the reliable performance and common availability of blue Tuck® Tape make it a solid and practical upgrade.

Upgrading from red Tuck tape to higher end brands listed above can be significant as they may be three and even five  times more expensive. Arguably that is still a very good investement, but if that is out of the question then at least aim for the blue Tuck tape which is generally about 10 to 15 percent more expensive, and definately worth the premium for what it offers long term.

Where to buy high performance building tape?

Building supply box stores will for the most part only offer you the bottom end building tapes. Why this is still the case is anyone's guess. Finding higher quality building products can take a bit more effort and is likely best done online.

And by that I mean - once you step into thee arena of high quality adhesives and membranes, they can have more specific uses, and there will be different products for different purposes.
