Can You Install Cork Flooring On Top Of Plywood?
We purchased cork flooring from Duro Design in Mtl two years ago and are only getting around to installing it now. Just wondering what type of surface preparation you recommend for a plywood underfloor prior to the application of the adhesive? We haven't broken the seal on the pail of adhesive, but am wondering if there is an expiry date on this type of product? Thanks!
Installing cork flooring over plywood is a standard practice, but the surface must be flawlessly prepared. Since cork is flexible, you'll likely notice any imperfections through to the surface. make sure the plywood is sanded smooth, free of dust, wax, or oils before starting. if its out of level you could consider a self-levelling concrete first to be sure of a flat and smooth final finish.
Most water-based adhesives have a shelf life of one to two years, so you'd be close, best to check with the manufacturer to be sure. If the glue has separated, smells sour, or contains lumps that won't stir out, it has likely expired and could lead to poor bonding and peeling corners later. here is a guide page that will help -
Guide to Installing and Finishing Cork Flooring
If the plywood has large gaps or knots, apply a floor leveling compound (self levelling concrete) or a specialized wood filler to create a monolithic surface. A high-quality primer can also help regulate the absorption rate of the adhesive, ensuring a stronger bond. This preparation is key to a floor that remains stable for decades.
