The NOYER THOW

Bathroom, Greater Los Angeles Area

The Noyer was built in close collaboration with a client from California. This 1 bedroom tiny house on wheels is quite different from our previous projects on many levels, including the roof slope and the bedroom layout. This unit, just like all of our houses, is meant to perform as well in a Californian climate as in a northern climate such as Quebec. The Noyer is intended to be inhabited full-time by a couple or a single person. Here’s a more detailed presentation of this unique tiny home.

  • 32×48 shower
  • Floor storage
  • Bedroom loft with utility platform

The interior of the Noyer really gives the impression of being in a small apartment. Indeed, the layout of the different areas creates a different feeling than in our previous models. Even without separations, the disposition of the elements creates the effect of distinct living areas, looking like a small open-plan dwelling. The general appearance is very warm, due to the different colors used for wood and other materials. As you can see in the pictures, the wood is clearly in the spotlight in this 1 storey tiny house!

For this construction, we created a blend between a charcoal-colored steel siding and an brown dyed eastern cedar cladding. The different transitions between the two materials make it possible to make them stand out. This combination is a novelty; we worked along with the client to come up with this unique design that perfectly demonstrates how possible it is to give a unique look to a small home. The roof slope differs from our previous tiny homes, giving a dynamic and less linear exterior look, while allowing a better clearance above the head when the occupants are in the bedroom loft.

The Noyer’s living area is one of the most interesting we’ve designed to date. Indeed, this space is elevated compared to the rest of the house and it is accessed with a removable step. The height difference creates a separation that gives the impression of being in another room. We also included some floor storage under the couch area and under the TV area in addition to two huge 8 feet deep drawers, accessible from the kitchen. We installed a large window at the bottom of the living area above which is the air conditioning / heating unit. There is also a small wall separating this space from the entrance, on which are located the various switches and controls as well as hooks for coats.

The Noyer’s kitchen is very minimalist, but includes all the elements necessary for functional use. As for the amenities, there is an apartment size refrigerator, a propane cooktop, a dishwasher drawer and a designated place for a toaster oven. The farm sink is installed on a walnut counter above which we have installed 4 shelves, also walnut. For cabinets, our client opted for a dark blue color and copper handles, which perfectly matches the wood of the ceiling and the overall design. In addition, we included toe-kick drawers under the cabinets. The backsplash is unique, especially for the portion between the shelves; the pattern was generated from a photo of an antique vase that was bequeathed to our client by her grandmother. This particular touch makes this creation truly unique.

The bedroom in the Noyer model is definitely a nice innovation. Located in the loft, it is accessed with the storage staircase. There is a Queen size bed with bedside tables on each side. This space is very ergonomic, allowing the occupants to sit comfortably on the bed while having a good clearance over the head. However, what makes this room so special is undoubtedly the platform next to the loft, offering the opportunity to change while standing in front of the wardrobe. Indeed, this feature greatly improves the functionality of the bedroom.

Located under the bedroom, the bathroom is quite surprising. Like the kitchen, it is compact, but contains all the necessary elements for optimal use. There is a large 32×48 shower with glass doors, a custom vanity, a Separett composting toilet and a 2-in-1 washer-dryer combo. We’ve also managed to include storage for towels and a small mechanical room, where we installed the propane instant water heater and the 12V fuse panel. As in all of our models, we included an exhaust fan and the ceiling is made with stained and varnished cedar, providing good protection against moisture.

In all our models, many elements are optional: heating floor, materials choices, skylight, solar systems, etc. The design elements are chosen by the customers, but can me modified to fit your own preferences. In short, all options and features depend on your budget as well as your personal needs.
