How can I stop baseboard heaters making loud noises?
In our home built in 1995 we have zone heating in 3 areas, each with their own electric baseboard heaters under the windows. The thermostats control 2-3 heaters each. One in the entrance for the hallway heater and reception room. One in the kitchen and family room and one upstairs for the 3 bedrooms. We have two problems. One is that several of these baseboard heaters are very noisy - they buzz, they tick, they even make a loud ping - which often wakes us up. The other problem is that we never seem to get a comfortable temperature, we're either too cold or too hot, and are constantly swinging the thermostats up and down! We've asked a couple of heating engineers who each came up with different solutions. One said that the heaters are getting old and suggested replacing them with more modern baseboard heaters and thermostats. The other suggested we should pull them all out and install 3 heat pumps as there are grants that may end soon and they're cheaper to run. Either way, we're not looking forward to getting the quotes!
So, the question is, what would you suggest are our best options for stopping the baseboard heaters making their constant noise - and for getting better comfort? Can't believe the first owners never did anything about it!
We have often been asked what to do about noisy baseboard heaters, and how to stop baseboard heaters from making noise when they start up and stop. It happens with electric baseboards and radiators as well as water / gas radiators.

Sometimes what causes baseboards to make noise when they start and stop is actually the thermostat, and sometimes it is the electric or water radiators themselves, where the fins have been damaged or bent. All that to say, in there you should find the way to stop baseboards from making noise. If it doesn’t answer all your questions let us know!
