Where should I put an air barrier on a log home insulated from the outside only?

...wool (batten) right against the wood beams on the outside. Then an air barrier- WRB (as sealed as possible), then another layer of continuous rockwool board, followed by an air gap with diagonal furrings. Then we will attach vertical wood siding. Is this a good plan? Is the location for the air barrier right? To clarif...

How to deal with condensation in basement?

...mineral wool between the studs, then cover it with drywall. I'm going to add mechanical ventilation & a dehumidifier to the basement. I have a few questions: 1. What kind of insulation should I add behind the rim joists? I feel like spray foam is the answer, but I'm a little concerned about off-gassing. 2. I'm worr...

What is the best way to insulate the exterior of a log home?

...mineral wool insulation or rigid EPS foam. Mineral wool lets the moisture move right through it, EPS foam would be a perfect 2/3rds vapor barrier. That would be assuming you install at least 4 inches (about R24) if you have an 8 inch wall. This particular option for attaching rigid EPS foam panels to the exterior of a ...

What are the best materials for soundproofing interior walls?

...wool? Since we read about rockwool sometimes being too loose and falling out before adding the gypsum. Any advice for the best (and most ecological) sound proofing option for a first floor ceiling (not an attic) would be very welcome. Finally, how does the costs of a system using rock wool versus cellulose compare?    ...

Can you insulate a concrete block basement walls with only rockwool?

...mineral wool and mold resistant drywall and paint with latex paint. Floor would be dimpled mat over concrete slab and vinyl plank flooring. No current plan to seal walls and we are leaving plenty of air gaps near unfinished ceiling where floor joists are. We would have a dehumidifier. Anything in here that jumps out as...

Fill gap between wood stud wall and closed cell foam or fill the stud bays?

...wool mineral wool batt insulation between the stud bays but you are worried about the air space, why not just stick with the foam and skip the Rockwool? Given that you will already have a spray foam installer there, if it were me and I was already doing I would just have them do a couple more inches and skip the Rockwo...

Can you use Comfortboard mineral wool insulation as a skirt on monolithic slab?

...wool comfortboard mineral wool insulation at foundation skirting. We did just that on our 2015 demo house project, and the company wasn’t  a whole lot more helpful at the time for us either. Slab on grade foundation insulation is not a market they seem interested in competing in. They told us it *should* be fine, and t...

What is the best way to insulate a 1930s brick house from the outside?

Hello I have a semi detached house in Toronto Canada. The house built in the 1930's is double brick wall. The house is original and has little to no insulation right now. I want to insulate the house from the outside with as high R value as possible. After insulation I was thinking James Hardie siding. Apparently brick...

How do you insulate concrete basement walls and avoid mould?

...Wool Comfort 80 Board to the entire wall, and then when the time is right frame and finish. If I’m getting this right, you had insulation in the rim joist cavities then a foil faced foam board over top? If so, the foil is acting as a vapor barrier and preventing moisture from escaping. The beauty of Rockwool Mineral wo...

How do can I insulate an existing basement floor from 1906?

Old house; basement is only 21% of total under house footage. 79% is crawl space. Basement Never painted. Walls go up 4 ft to a 2ft wide ledge and then the old stone foundation. 1 side is an exterior wall; 3 sides are crawl space beyond the stone.  A lot of heat is lost through uninsulated basement floors, so good idea...

What type of Insulation can I use on the exterior of my home?

...wool (or mineral wool) panels are a safe bet for you as they do not stop the outward migration of moisture. There are two brands that may be available in Saskatchewan, Rockwool (formerly Roxul) and Johns Manville. The other think you'll need is a weather barrier / weather resistive barrier (WRB), and a breatheable one ...

What is the best way to insulate a 2x8 wall?

...wool comes in batt insulation as well as rigid, so  I wouldn’t be cutting it up to fit anywhere, they should have the sizes you need. Rockwool, (formerly known as Roxul),  is very permeable to moisture so while it isn’t the cheapest, it is the most foolproof as it won’t ever trap moisture like some foam insulation can....

...mineral wool insulation with studs on 16oc all the way until Joist levels. ( Not insulated) can touch concrete. And no Vapor barrier. The basement is also dry and not humid.
