Our internationally recognized design studio is dedicated to exploring the beneficial role nature can play in the built environment. Building on sustainable design strategies, we create environments which restore wellness to individuals and communities, as well as the land itself. We believe that good design can protect and elevate our experiences, while advancing the stewardship of our shared resources. Creating meaningful landscapes in public environments requires attention to a wide and diverse array of challenges. Broad issues such as climate change, social justice, and overcrowding find specific expression in the sites we shape. The complexity of these systems and the way people use them inspire us to find appropriate and thoughtful solutions that can last. Dirtworks is currently designing places with a range of relevant qualities, such as accessible campuses, ecological restoration sites, and culturally significant properties. These complex characteristics frequently overlay within a single space, so we base our solutions on an understanding of the importance of integrating green approaches in both urban and rural settings. We recognize that our designs will shape the way a new generation of citizens approach their surroundings and take this charge seriously. This focus provides us with a solid foundation to make our projects meaningful to the project’s users, while improving the quality of the surrounding environment as well.
