As Vermonters assessed statewide damage in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, it became clear that mobile home residents were disproportionately affected by this extreme weather event. Although mobile homes make up only 7% of Vermont's housing stock, they comprised 15% of the homes damaged during and after the storm. Responding to the need for affordable, resilient housing, the High Meadows Fund, VHCB, and Efficiency Vermont came together to form the Modular Housing lnnovation Project. In 2013, the coalition worked with Steve Davis, a Hartford builder with long record of energy-efficient construction and community engagement, to take on the 10-home pilot phase of the project. Shortly thereafter, VerMod opened its doors. The company quickly outgrew its first location, and moved to its current location in an old UPS warehouse in Wilder. Today, VerMod has set nearly 100 zero-energy modular homes around the state and employs 20 Upper Valley residents. Partnering with Efficiency Vermont's ZeroEnergy Modular (ZEM) Program, VerMod continues to provide affordable housing for low- and moderate-income Vermonters with a special focus on replacing mobile/manufactured homes.
