Mark Hesselgrave is an architect providing consulting services to design firms, developers, and property owners. Raised in Northern California and transplanted to New England, Mark’s design aesthetic is a blend of craft-inspired construction and cutting edge industrial technologies. Mark received his master’s degree from the Yale School of Architecture in 1985, and immediately joined the firm of Cesar Pelli & Associates. There he worked on a wide range of projects for universities and institutions across the country, including the Cleveland Clinic, University of California Riverside, UCLA, Trinity College, and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton. Mark’s skill in coordinating complex technical projects led to his promotion to Senior Associate. He was Project Manager for three projects at the Cleveland Clinic, comprised of laboratories, clinical space, and public areas totaling over 700,000 square feet. Mark left CP&A in 2000 to join Flad Architects as a Senior Designer in Flad’s Connecticut office. Flad is known for achieving high design quality in technically complex lab buildings. As Senior Designer, Hesselgrave led the Connecticut office in a feasibility study for City University of New York, transforming CUNY’s outdated Marshak lab building into a state-of-the-art facility of nearly one million square feet. In 2002, Hesselgrave joined Fletcher Thompson to serve as Senior Design Leader for the Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. Mark was responsible for all design and client presentations, guiding the design from inception to construction. Returning to Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects in 2004, Mark provided technical expertise on numerous projects, concentrating on solutions for exterior wall systems for projects such as the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami and the City Center Convention Center in Las Vegas. He served as Project Manager for the New Haven Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School, which opened to students in 2009 to offer an exemplary education in the arts. As a private consultant, Mark works with clients to provide peer review and technical design services to teams on an as needed basis. Mark works in all phases of the design process, but his primary contribution is in the aesthetic and technical development of exterior wall systems and complex interiors. He also specializes in providing quality management systems to architectural offices.
