Our Story: Forged in the Mountains
The story of RDC Fine Homes could only happen in a place like Whistler. Success here demands a unique combination of vision, resilience, and a deep respect for quality craftsmanship. Since our start in 1993, RDC has focused on building and renovating high-performance homes that are as durable and sustainable as the mountains around us.
Our founder and president, Bob Deeks, first came to Whistler after a brief career in a suit and tie, drawn by the alpine lifestyle. It was here, in this rugged landscape, that the groundwork for RDC Fine Homes was established.
From Humble Beginnings to Master Builder
The company began through a fortunate turn of events. In the spring of 1993, a hotel renovation project Bob was on came to a sudden halt. Just as he started looking for new work, a call came from the hotel's property manager, who needed other projects completed. With that, RDC (Robert Deeks Construction) was born, initially taking on hotel maintenance and repairs with help from a few friends.
A key turning point came when Bob and a fellow ski coach decided to build a spec house in the new Millers Pond subdivision. The team poured their energy into the project, handling everything from the foundation and framing to the interior finishing.
"That first house taught me everything about what it truly takes to build from the ground up," reflects Bob Deeks. "The profit was modest, but the knowledge was priceless. It solidified my passion and gave me the confidence to say, 'I am a home builder.'"
A Commitment to Sustainable Excellence
A drive for continuous learning led Bob to join the Canadian Home Builders' Association in 2003, where he dove into courses on project management and advanced construction methods. It was here he was introduced to the principles of high-performance building and the value of certification programs like Built Green .
This new knowledge was put into practice in 2006 with a significant renovation, the "Toad Hollow" project. The client was passionate about sustainability, and the RDC team welcomed the opportunity. The home was completely transformed, lifted from its original foundation and stripped to the studs to be rebuilt for modern performance and aesthetics.
"We not only upgraded all the finishes but also reduced the home's energy use by over 50%, earning a Built Green Gold Certification (the highest level at the time)," says Bob. "That project won two provincial Georgie Awards and set us on our path to becoming a leader in high-performance homes. We knew then that we could help lead the industry forward."
The RDC Approach: Integrated Design for Better Results
Building a custom home is one of the most complex investments a person can make. The traditional construction process, where a design is completed before a builder provides a price, is often known for leading to budget overruns and conflict.
At RDC, we knew there was a better way. Over the years, we have perfected an Integrated Design Process (IDP). This collaborative approach brings the client, designer, and our build team together from the very beginning.
"We want to establish a relationship of trust early on, sometimes even before a client has purchased a lot," Bob notes. "By working together through the design and mapping out a budget from the start, we ensure the vision and the investment are perfectly aligned. This eliminates the 'sticker shock' that can happen when a dream design proves too costly to build."
This process provides clarity and certainty, ensuring every detail is considered before construction begins, which leads to healthier homes and happier families.
Building for Today and Tomorrow
With decades of experience, RDC Fine Homes is a trusted partner in bringing our clients' visions to life. Our homes simply work better, live better, and last better. They offer uniform comfort through every season, superior indoor air quality, and lasting energy efficiency. As early adopters of building technology, we have remained at the forefront of the industry.
As British Columbia advances the BC Energy STEP Code, many builders are facing new challenges. Having already completed numerous homes to the highest steps of the code, RDC has the proven experience to deliver the most comfortable, healthy, and high-performing homes on the market.
Our focus for the future extends beyond operational energy. As our climate changes, the next great challenge is reducing the embodied carbon in our projects. By carefully selecting low-carbon materials, minimizing waste, and creating more efficient construction practices, we are working to protect the natural playground we are all lucky to call home for generations to come.
