About
While our company has evolved significantly, our goal to enhance the built and natural environments has stayed the same. JMT was originally founded as a Professional Association of partners and associates in 1971 by Charles Johnson, Michael McCordic, and Bruce Thompson under the name of Johnson, McCordic & Thompson, P.A., in Silver Spring, MD. The company focused on planning, engineering, and surveying for residential and commercial projects. In 1978, a second, similar private development office opened in Fairfax, VA. In 1979, Fred Mirmiran joined the partnership with the goal of expanding into the public works market by focusing on transportation engineering for federal, state, and local public agencies. In 1980, JMT expanded its public works market into Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and the name of JMT was changed to Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, JMT developed into a multimodal transportation firm. From the mid-1990s, JMT continued to diversify our markets to include services for buildings and facilities, water/wastewater, and utilities. In 2011, JMT became a 100% employee-owned company. Through our employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), our employee owners have a vested interest in the success of our projects. Today, JMT provides consulting services to a varied client base of public and private entities. This diversification of markets and services has resulted in considerable geographic expansion, providing services across the United States. Even though our capabilities have grown, Engineering A Brighter Future® remains part of our philosophy of making our communities more livable and sustainable.
