What is the optimal setup for mechanical systems for slab on grade?

...heat pump for heating and cooling) is a very well-insulated and airtight envelope, so it doesn't require a lot of heating and cooling in the first place. It is also fairly open, and it has hydronic radiant floors for backup heating, so a ductless mini-split heat pump is sufficient. It also depends on what you call comf...

Can you help me choose between a slab on grade and pressure treated wood foundation?

...radiant heating tubes, mesh and rebar of course) but not wood. A wooden structure would sit on top, above grade where it can dry properly.  If you are chemically sensitive then there are any number of materials that may go into a home that might cause you health concerns. We built a LEED Platinum demonstration home (th...

Would you recommend Legalett over water radiant floor heat for a backyard studio in Toronto?

...heater and water or gel radiant floor heating, or the air system that Legalett uses. I am also wondering how much rebar should be in a slab on grade floor and if it's okay to have the perimeter touching the ground without any insulation beneath it?  The most cost-effective system to deliver in-floor radiant heat would ...

Does hydronic radiant cooling work?

...radiant floors as a starting place - Radiant floor heat - Air heated, electric of hydronic, which is best?  Even in the appropriate climate it is a fairly complicated system and needs to be carefully designed, and it would need to be coupled with a very good ERV to keep the Relative Humidity low. Alternatively, we woul...

Are there any updates on the progress of the second demonstration house?

...heated floors across Canada and the U.S. since the mid-70s, and even longer in Sweden where the company originated, so there is nothing new there; it's the addition of the solar air panels that is new at this point. We expect to see about 60-70 % of the heat load but we won't know for sure until the winter of 2020 - 20...

What are the factors I should consider for choosing between a slab on grade and basement?

...heat/cool with an ERV and mini split system, not radiant in floor.  I have several questions about the merits of each option, and would appreciate advice. 1. Cost - I know a slab is cheaper but having a basement that we can finish allows for a smaller footprint with less walls and roof material.  Is there a big differe...

What should I look for if I want to buy a slab on grade house?

...radiant floor I would personally want to see the utility bills to know what a winters worth of heat would cost.  And a last piece of advice - don't be instantly leery of it simply because it is a slab. As long as it is in good shape, I would consider that an asset compared to a basement.

What is the Kenogami House heating system?

...heating during sunny winter days that provided too much passive solar heat. How well did that experiment work at collecting excess heat?   It was also mentioned using the radiant hydronic floor, moving purposely heated water in the radiant tubing to help balance the excess heating. My understanding was that the unheate...

Can I see details about the heating and domestic hot water systems of the Edelweiss house?

...radiant floor is heated with an electric boiler, it is a separate system than the heat pump. The intention of the heated floor is primary to ensure comfort and happy feet, the air-source heat pump is far more efficient and so we rely primarily on that to heat the air of the home. The domestic hot water is a heat pump a...

Every aspect of the design and manufacturing of Warmboard has been implemented to maximize performance.'' I don’t see any leap at all here, I jus...

Is hydronic slab heat appropriate in a super insulated home?

...heat pump for domestic hot water and hydronic heat. I'm inclined to have the hydronic heat installed in the floor but I've heard that it's not necessary and will "overheat the house". One local supplier recommends the Minotair HRV with integrated hydronic heat loop, essentially an improved forced air heating system. My...

Which radiant floor heat is best?

...heating a wire, or a wire heats air or water and then forces it through tubing in a floor. So hydronic, air heated floors or electric mats heating systems are effectively the same in efficiency.  The differences are subtle, but in the case of the air heated floors, the heater is in the floor itself so all the heat is c...

Does a slab on grade need to have under floor heating?

...radiant ready’ at least in case you found it to be too cold.  As for putting wood or other materials on top, that isn’t a problem, as long as you have vapour protection underneath, and let it dry before you do that. So in the case of radiant heat,  you can speed cure it by running the heater and then doing a moisture t...
