Are there auto balancing ERV/HRV system?

I'm in the phase of developing a new residential project; airtight building envelope with more than ample insulation. In doing so, I've discussed installing an energy recovery ventilator with my HVAC contractor. We will look at doing some form of energy audit to size the system. My greatest concern is how the ERV funct...

Can you install a wood stove in an airtight, super-insulated house?

I will be building a house in Atlin, BC (zone 3), and was hoping to have a wood stove as back up heat for my hydronic slab on grade in addition to the aethstetics and comfort it would provide.  However, the thought of punching a 2 sq ft uninsulated hole through the roof with a steel column running up through the centre...

Building a Honka log “pretty good house” planning - thoughts on hvac, ventilation and roof

We are planning a Honka log house. 2 stories, 1750 sq ft. The solid Finnish pine logs perform really well, people say they provide superior air quality and behave as thermal batteries / but I can't tell how close to a passive / pretty-good-house their R value brings them. I'm hoping to get some feedback and possibly al...

Best small ventilation HRV or ERV for a camper van or tiny house?

Seems the only technology now available is a roof fan and an open window for ventilating my tiny home, which isn't a good solution in hot or cold climates. Ideally the HRV or ERC system I'm looking for would be powered by 12 or 24Vdc. Thanks Ventilation in tiny houses seems to be often overlooked for some reason, thoug...

Can you use a Lunos E2 HRV System to circulate air between two floors?

...HRV, whether it is a ductless HRV like the Lunos or has a centralized core, is to recover heat before it is ejected from home. Unless I’m missing something then I don’t see the need if ‘re just trying to move air around.

Can you preheat ERV inlet air?

...HRV inlet air with a dedicated tube that runs through a heated slab? Similar to a geothermal heat exchanger concept. Yes, you can run what is called a ‘ground loop’ below grade to warm or cool incoming air to your ERV or HRV depending on the season. This is seen sometimes in extremely high performing homes or Passive H...

Improving the efficiency of a home built in 1978 during renovations, do I need an HRV?

...HRV in an older leaky home? There are lots of articles explaining the importance of balanced ventilation in tight homes, seems like air quality could/should be improved in older leaky homes as well. Or would the excessive air leaks make the HRV not effective? The only way to truly know if an HRV is required in an old...

How do you install your own DIY radon mitigation system?

...HRV in the basement that is activated by a radon gas detector; that would eliminate the risk of accidentally damaging any pipes below the slab since you don’t know where they are. The HRV can be set to leave the basement pressurized to keep the radon gas down. That may be a risk-free way to deal with radon (depending o...

How do you install a ground loop for an HRV?

...HRV. I understand using the ground loop fluid to preheat the air in the winter prior to entering the HRV but would in not be beneficial to have a second ground loop heat exchanger after the HRV in the summer?  This would allow for the coldest source (ground loop fluid) to effect the greatest change on the air after it ...
