Beginning in 1974, Sunstructures Architects has practiced an integrated approach to design and building: integrating environment and architecture, people and place, building and systems. Over the years, Sunstructures’ principals have formed project work teams of professional consultants uniquely suited for the scope and requirements of particular projects. Such associations have included land planning and landscape architecture firms, mechanical/electrical engineering firms, structural engineering firms, and other architecture firms. As involved principals in Sunstructures Architects, Wayne Appleyard and Robert Black, share the responsibilities necessary to successfully deliver world-class designs for a variety of projects. Mr. Appleyard has served as project manager, project architect, and systems engineer for projects utilizing energy-intelligent design, green building, and sustainable approaches to site and building. Mr. Black brings a wide-range of experience in project management, team-building and client/user coordination, and expertise in sustainable design and construction. Project types have included: large and small scale educational facilities, child-care facilities, environmental education centers, commercial office buildings, high-tech research facilities, and residences. Sunstructures Architects continues to develop its leadership in cutting-edge technologies, materials and sustainable approaches to design and building. Firm principals have regularly taught classes and workshops, presented research papers, published in conference proceedings and periodicals on topics ranging from alternative energy, to sustainable design, watershed management, and practical, maintainable building components. Recognized as regional experts in the fields of energy and sustainability, Sunstructures Architects maintains a large database of the latest information on materials, systems, and strategies in sustainable design.
