Develop Springfield has a rich history of contributing to the revitalization and development of Springfield, Massachusetts, since its formation in 2008. The organization, as a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) corporation, has been pivotal in advancing development and redevelopment projects aimed at stimulating economic growth and expediting the revitalization process within the city. Our work encompasses a wide array of projects, focusing on bricks-and-mortar redevelopment and planning projects that engage various sectors of the community. Notable projects include the site preparation for potential redevelopment of the former River Inn on State Street and the historic rehabilitation of the Gunn Block at the corner of State and Walnut Streets. Another significant project was the development of the Lower Maple Business Park, which included the historic rehabilitation of the Ansel Phelps House at 83 Maple Street, the former Female Seminary at 77 Maple Street, and the Carriage House at 69 Maple Street, with plans to redevelop these for office use. Moreover, Develop Springfield’s Corridor Storefront Improvement Program provides grants to street-level businesses on State and Main Streets for façade improvements. This program is a testament to their commitment to enhancing the visual appeal and functionality of business spaces in key areas of the city. The organization also played a role in single-family home development in the Central Street area, which was heavily impacted by a tornado, and a Curb Appeal program to assist homeowners with street-visible improvements in the neighborhood. In terms of planning projects, Develop Springfield has been involved in the revitalization of various areas, including the Worthington Street area, State Street Corridor, Federal Square area, and the FutureCity2025 Economic Development Plan. Their efforts continue with plans to bring a full-line grocery store to the Mason Square area. Develop Springfield also collaborated with Commonwealth, MassDevelopment, the City of Springfield, Valley Venture Mentors, the Innovation Hub, and MassMutual Financial Group to establish an Innovation Center on Bridge Street in downtown Springfield.
