Mafic Design Build was founded on a simple conviction: that the homes we build should perform as well as they look. Based in Bozeman, Montana, we design and construct custom homes, Passive House builds, energy retrofits, and whole-home remodels for clients across the Gallatin Valley and beyond.
What sets us apart is integration. Most builders rely on separate consultants to handle energy design, we do it in-house. Owner and founder Stefan Mitrovich holds dual certification from the Passive House Institute as both a Certified Passive House Designer/Consultant (CPHDC) and Certified Passive House Tradesperson (CPHT), meaning the energy modeling, the construction details, and the verified performance all come from one accountable team.
Stefan brings 25+ years of experience across residential, commercial, and industrial construction, with degrees in Earth Sciences and Architecture from Montana State University. He stays current through the North American Passive House Network's Rocky Mountain Chapter, the Journal of Light Construction, and ongoing Passive House Institute continuing education.
Every Mafic project is built on four principles: solid and precise craft, modern building science, genuine collaboration with clients and project partners, and transparent project management from first sketch to final walk-through. We work with a limited number of clients each year so that every project receives Stefan's direct involvement and attention.

At Mafic Design Build, sustainability isn't a feature we add, it's the foundation we build from.
We believe the built environment has an obligation to perform better: to consume less energy, last longer, and provide healthier spaces for the people who live in them. Passive House construction is our primary vehicle for that commitment. By combining airtight building envelopes, continuous insulation, triple-pane windows, and controlled mechanical ventilation, we build homes that use 80–90% less energy for heating and cooling than conventional construction, not as a certification exercise, but because it's the right way to build in Montana's demanding climate.
Our approach to sustainability extends beyond energy performance. We select durable, low-maintenance materials that reduce the lifetime environmental footprint of every building. We design for resilience; homes that remain comfortable and safe during power outages, fuel shortages, and weather extremes. And we design every project with a clear path to net zero, so that a modest renewable energy system can complete what the building envelope starts.
Montana's landscapes are worth protecting. Building homes that tread more lightly on them is one way we do our part.
