The year was 1975. The man’s name was Tom Johnston. The location was the Basemar Shopping Center. The vision was to provide the community with superior service for a fair price. The proprietor, Tom, was a community beacon. A past local and state Jaycee president, a national Jaycee Senator, a Rotarian, a YMCA board member, president of the Flatirons Country Club, and a supporter of numerous non-profits. Anyone living in Boulder Colorado for more than a few years knew Tom. While Tom was busy launching his new business, Buffalo Lock & Key, Inc., his eldest child, Cindy, was graduating from Fairview High School. 30 years came and went. Tom, wanting to retire, and Cindy, wanting out of corporate America, came to an accord. For the first few years it was business as usual, but that was about to change. Because of our reputation for integrity, our commitment to our profession, and our growth strategies, Buffalo Lock & Key, Inc. was invited to join the Medeco Security Center (MSC) program. With less than 200 MSC’s in North America, this was an honor. It gave us the opportunity to network with the best of the best, learning best practices from across the country and being on the forefront of innovative security solutions. Soon the company doubled in size, then tripled. We haven’t slowed down yet. Early on we knew the bigger purpose was helping people and today we are proud to support dozens of non-profits without regard to personal beliefs. We also recognized the need to protect our planet and our natural resources. Buffalo understood the importance of supply chain sustainability before it was popular. We partnered with companies that embraced the way raw materials were sourced, prioritized the plant and factory working conditions, and focused on reducing their carbon footprint, Leading the industry, globally, has been and continues to be, Assa Abloy (the parent company of Medeco.) It was there we learned how a little old lock can cause ripples across the ocean. The entire Buffalo management team is LEED Green Associates. Not because it helped sell locks, but because it helped us to understand the breath of sustainable building practices and the role a door plays. With our renewed commitment to our community, our sustainability focus and our drive to provide innovative security solutions, we rebranded the company Buffalo Security. With that rebranding we embraced the concept of conscious capitalism and continue to choose to operate that way.
