Attune was founded in 2014 by Dr. Serene Almomen and Dr. Julien Stamatakis, two scientists with a passion for seamlessly bringing data from the physical environment into the cloud. They both laughably admit that Attune was founded before they ever knew that the Internet of Things (IoT) was even a “thing.” The technological roots of the company originated in Julien’s use of accelerometer sensors to help doctors objectively diagnose the severity levels of Parkinson’s disease patients. While the integration of additional sensors would enable a better diagnosis, the time to redevelop and re-code the system made it impractical. Based on modular industrial design principles, Julien and Serene created a novel IoT architecture that succeeded in integrating next-generation sensors on the fly, greatly increasing the number of product variations, and drastically reducing the time to market. The architectural flexibility was groundbreaking. The no-code sensor reconfiguration of IoT hardware enabled them to target under-performing buildings in desperate need of real-time sensor data. The pivot was natural, as they recognized the opportunity of using real-time sensor data to diagnose the health of buildings. In the years since, Attune has greatly expanded the reach of their IoT Platform in delivering industry-leading IoT products across various PropTech disciplines such as energy efficiency, HVAC asset condition monitoring (ACM), Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), remote facility management, and more.
